The Future

Google has announced its latest mobile operating system, Android 4.4
"KitKat". This version offers, among other things, host-emulation
mode for secure element NFC applications. This feature allows us to
reference a keystore on the device for secure applications as opening
electronic locks. The industry will be evaluating this feature for
security against hacks which will determine its usefulness; it may
take a couple of revisions to reduce security risks, but in the long
run this may be a game changer for using your phone or other mobile
device as a smart cryptographic keystore.

The Android market is predicted to explode
in the next three years.
One
analyst at Gartner predicts that Android will be the #2 phone
behind Symbian in terms of market share by 2012, with some 75 million
users.
Whether or not this prediction is optimistic, it's safe to say that Google's
phone operating system will be around for a while.

The future of handheld devices is an exciting one. As more consumers and
businesses experience the convenience and utility of handheld connected
devices, we anticipate a flood of new devices in the next few years.
Many new Android devices, both phones and netbooks, have been
announced. As the Android platform gains momentum, many more players
will enter this booming market. Apple continues to improve its
industry-leading design, and Palm has just jumped in with a strong
offering, the Pre.
Which of these devices will win? We believe that in the handheld
arena, there is room for many winners. Handheld operating systems
are less important to developers than the old desktop systems. With
much more focus on the internet and serverside databases, the
handheld becomes simply a convenient portal to one's data which resides safely in some
server room.
